The Trouble With Morrissey

In 1997, Stephen Patrick Morrissey released the song ‘Trouble Loves Me’. Trouble certainly seems to follow in the footsteps of the former lead vocalist of The Smiths.
In the 40-year career he has enjoyed since his mould-breaking Manchester band disintegrated, Morrissey has had ten Top 10 UK singles and nine Top 10 placings in the US Alternative Airplay chart, including hits ‘Every Like Is Like Sunday’ and ‘The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get’. He has worked with everyone from David Bowie and Mick Ronson to Siouxsie Sioux and Kirsty MacColl.
But he has also attracted headlines for his much publicised battles with record labels, for his pithy remarks about erstwhile Smiths bandmate, Johnny Marr, for seemingly aligning himself with right wing politicians, and for cancelling or abandoning shows (sometimes for seemingly spurious reasons), causing much consternation amongst his faithful followers.
The Trouble With Morrissey takes a look at La Moz’s career through the eyes of those who love Morrissey and those who perhaps once did but now don’t. Compiled by Morrissey fan Richard Houghton, who has seen Stretford’s most famous son at his most majestic but also walking off stage early, this book follows the journey of a musical icon down a very winding path.
